2017 Ellis A5 Special - Wide Nut

2017 Ellis A5 Special in excellent condition. Just some small finish pecks here and there that take up close scrutiny to notice.

An absolutely outstanding A5 from one of the all time great builders. This instrument has everything that we look for when separating the best of the best from all of the rest. Impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, precision components and playability, and of course the sound. The tone of this mandolin almost contradicts itself. It is incredibly lively, bright, and responsive but it also has a wonderful depth and warmth that words just can't accurately describe. It's powerful and resonant voice respond beautifully to just the lightest touch, but when played with more vigor it unveils other amazing layers of tonality. This is a mandolin that certainly rewards playing with different dynamics and would be just as at home played in an ensemble as well as a solo mandolin situation.

This instrument was custom ordered with some unique features. Aside from the wide nut, the fretboard was ordered with no position markers (there are side position markers on the neck) and a plain, unbound ebony pickguard. This combination provides a more streamlined look that we feel elevate the other beautiful features of the instrument. The neck profile also has more of a modified V profile than that of most Ellis mandolins. The set up is perfect and the mandolin plays beautifully in all positions with no issues whatsoever.

Adirondack spruce top, Sugar maple back/sides/neck, one piece back, varnish finish, gold hardware, fully bound in triple binding, "Flurn" headstock inlay (flower pot/fern) with gold coloration, ebony radiused fretboard, ebony adjustable bridge w/gold wheels, adjustable truss rod with ebony cover plate, gold Waverly tuners with ebony buttons, gold engraved James tailpiece, gold EVO frets, ebony pickguard, ebony endpin with pearl eye, 1-3/16" bone nut, strap button at neck heel. Comes with a Calton case (black exterior/olive interior).
