A few words about session etiquette...
At Fiddler's Green Music Shop we hold several different jam
sessions. We feel the best way to experience music is to get out
and play with others. Our sessions are meant to give musicians
and outlet for their music and, above all, they are meant to be FUN!
We invite anyone who is interested to come to our jam sessions to play
or to just listen, and hopefully to get immersed in the communal nature
of shared music.
We have a few guidelines for our sessions.
1. Everyone is welcome Whether you are
a seasoned professional or are just starting out you are welcome to
come and join in. The more the merrier! However, players must "fit in" in a way that does not disrupt the flow of the jam. For instance, at an advanced jam the advanced players tend to call the tunes, and beginners are welcome and encouraged to join in if they can keep up with the tempo. Likewise, at a general jam (no specified ability level) a strong player shouldn't play so fast that no one can keep up, and a raw beginner shouldn't use a jam session to try out the new tune they've been working on.
2. Respect the tradition Each different
tradition (irish, cajun, bluegrass, etc.) has it's own standards that
should be honored. For example, don't "noodle" through an irish
session, don't bring a saxophone to a bluegrass jam, and don't plug in
a Les Paul at a cajun jam! If you're not sure if something is
appropriate just ask someone. At Fiddler's Green, our sessions are acoustic. Please refrain from bringing electric instruments.
3. Respect each other! We should all maintain a non-exclusive, non-intimidating attitude toward other players. Players should also be
considerate about dominating the session. We're all here to have
fun!
